Sept/October Activities

It's been a busy fall and we owe you some pictures. Here's a brief summary of the last two months events.

September 16 is a very important Mexican holiday: Independence Day. A few of us (pictured above: Steph, Duane, Booie, Heidi, Kelly) went to a celebration at our church.  As is common throughout much of Mexico on this day, families bring food made in the traditional style of their state (Mexico has 31 different states; each with their own unique customs, foods, terrain, and even indigenous languages). Below you see pictured deserts from Mexico City (Federal District) & Sinaloa. Then at 11:00 pm we shouted the grita, ¡Viva México! In each zócalo (city square) that holds a celebration, the names of their heros of independence & each state are shouted. It was the funnest party we've been to in a long time!

   Below you have pictured what some claim to be the best hot dog stand in Tijuana. You can see Duane and Booie trying to decide which of the 10 extra options they will cover their hot dog with. You must note that the hot dog, by itself, comes wrapped in bacon and covered with beans, guacamole, mayo and  placed in a freshly baked bun. 

Enjoying cocos helados (coconut) with our friends John and Darby. Both have been working in different countries the last several months and were in town visiting us at the same time. We took this day in early September and went to our favorite beach south of the border, La Misión.

Steph and Heidi (below) joined our missionary friend, Ruth, for a quinceañera party (commonly thrown when a Mexican girl turns 15). At the end of the night the family provided opportunities to have photos taken with the novia.  So below you have three American women posing as in a family portriat.

The staff girls decided it was time to have a night to themselves. So Steph and her compañeras went to Shawna's house, made dinner, and watched a movie.  From left to right is Heidi, Ruth Silver (Lyndsay's mother-in-law), Addie, Kelly, Shawna, and Lyndsay.

As a staff we visited a special exhibit at El Foro. Both the exhibit and the place are interesting. The Foro is a beautiful building located in downtown Tijuana; it was built in 1947 for the sporting game Jai-Alai. It is now used for special events. The exhibit we saw were mummies from the Mexican state of Guanajuato. The bodies were naturally mummified in underground cemeteries.
