Zinacantan

Last Sunday, our teacher’s brother took us to the Tzotzil village of Zinacantan. Seated in the hills above San Cristobal, this place is known worldwide for its export of flowers and intricately woven clothing. We were able to visit with a family (shown in the pictures), who like most of the women there, make their living from selling hand made textiles. Their kitchen was a small dirt-floor building with an open fire and chicken running around. They graciously served us hand-ground corn tortillas, cheese, and salsa while they chatted with each other in a mixture of Tzotzil and Spanish. In one of the pictures Stephanie is wearing a traditional Aztec-style wedding dress and a more modern shawl that most women wear in Zinacantan. The lady next to Ryan is Juanita; she had just showed him how to put on the belt he is wearing.
